Spring Awakening
I was contracted to play this show for a theater in Tacoma, and really enjoyed digging into a show that I knew of but had never played. After doing it, I will die on the hill that this, not Rent, is the definitive Gen X musical. Duncan Sheik wrote the music, and the guitar book is full of gritty/jangly electric guitar and lush, open-tuned acoustic.
The bass part has a shocking amount of upright for an alt-rock show, but it’s written very effectively. The setup I ended up with was:
BASSES
Upright: Lemur Brian Bromberg, Evah Pirazzi Weichs, DPA CORE+ 4099 mic + Gage Realist LifeLine pickup
Electric: 1971 Fender Precision, Rotosound stainless steels
SIGNAL CHAIN:
Upright > EBS Stanley Clarke preamp
Electric > Ampeg SGT-DI
Both preamps > Lehle Little Lehle III FX Looper/AB switch > Dunlop DVP4 Volume X Mini volume pedal > Caveman Audio BP1 Compact preamp > FOH
AMP
Trickfish Bullhead .5K/L112M + Phil Jones EarBox for monitoring
